About the MediData patient portal
MediData was founded in 1994 to make electronic invoicing a reality in the Swiss healthcare system. Today, we present ourselves as a competent IT service provider and a solid SME in the heart of Central Switzerland. Together with partners and customers, MediData endeavours to electronically transfer data (invoices, invoice copies, reimbursement receipts, etc.) that is currently still sent in paper format in the healthcare system. One of the ways we do this is through our patient portal.
“Moving away from paper and towards digitalisation” has a number of advantages. Administrative work can be minimised on all sides, and costs can be saved in the healthcare system as a result. Processes will be simplified, and we will also be able to reduce the environmental impact. Our solutions are used by health and accident insurers, doctors, hospitals, radiology centres, laboratories, pharmacies, Spitex (home nursing service) and cantons. Wherever data needs to be sent electronically in a secure and efficient way.
Information security and data protection
Nowadays, more and more personal documents are being sent over the Internet – because it is cheaper and faster. However, the usual security standard is not sufficient for some documents. MediData enables its customers to send sensitive data in a secure and legal manner, is certified according to ISO 27001 and complies with the national Ordinance on Data Protection Certification (DPCO). This makes the electronic sending of invoices, reimbursement receipts and other documents as easy as sending e-mails.
The invoice copy or invoice is not sent directly to the patients by e-mail, but rather an e-mail with a link to a web portal is sent. The patients then click on the link and have to authenticate themselves via an SMS code in order to receive the invoice copy. However, prior registration with MediData by patients is not required.
In order to receive a document, patients undergo two-factor authentication (e-mail and mobile phone number). If the service provider were to type the e-mail address incorrectly (e.g. peterexample@mail.com instead of peter.example@mail.com), the wrong recipient would not be able to do anything with it unless they also have the appropriate mobile phone number. They would also not be able to draw any conclusions about the intended recipient. This ensures data protection.
The invoice or a copy of the invoice (PDF) is encrypted (via an HTTPS page) and is therefore compliant with data protection regulations. The e-mail to patients is sent unencrypted. Since the e-mail itself only contains a link, but no sensitive data, it is possible to send it unencrypted. Intercepting this e-mail would not allow an attacker to draw any conclusions about the patients. In addition, an attacker cannot download the invoice or a copy of the invoice (PDF) without having simultaneous access to the patient’s mobile phone.
Yes. All service providers are obliged to obtain the necessary consent from their patients. MediData does not check this, but assumes that service providers only send documents to recipients from whom they have obtained the necessary consent.
